Exodus Variable Typeface
Type Design, Print
2023
In a variable type workshop during my last semester, I began to sketch out ideas of how a typeface with a scientific topic could translate visually. Inspired by an article about shrinking living space for species in The New York Times, I decided to create a typeface whose weight variable represents population cluster density.
When environments for species to live in decrease, the natural reaction is for remaining species to move away from habitat destruction. This results in population clusters forming in more concentrated areas where ecosystems have not yet been destroyed. This very process of species movement due to habitat destruction has been the focus of Exodus, a variable typeface for the 6th mass extinction.
